History In Wexford

History

Wexford (Self Catering, Wexford, Ireland) is a Viking name. The Gaelic name for County Wexford is Loch Garman, which means estuary by the coast.

As the origin of the name suggests, Wexford (Holiday Apartments, Wexford, Ireland) was colonized by the Vikings in the 9th century, and occupied it until the 12th century. In 1169, Wexford was taken by the Anglo- Norman invaders.

In 1649, the forces of Oliver Cromwell stormed the town of Wexford, slaughtering 200 inhabitants. Wexford was one of the main initiators of the Rebellion of 1798. The Battle of Vinegar Hill in the town of Enniscorthy spearheaded Wexfords role in the rebellion against the English invaders.

Co. Wexford
H_Mount_Leinster.jpg Co. Wexford (Bed and Breakfasts, Wexford, Ireland) forms the south-eastern corner of Ireland. The whole of its eastern and southern sides faces the sea, and the tidal Barrow forms its south-western edge. It is drained mainly by the. Slaney, which flows southward across the county to meet the sea at Wexford Harbour; the river is tidal as far as Enniscorthy. The surface is generally low- and undulating, but Mount Leinster, rising on its western edge forms a landmarkover the whole county. Wexford is exceedingly fertile, and nowhere in Ireland is agriculture conducted with greater efficiency and success. The coast is low and mostly sandy from Rosslare. near the south-eastern corner, a fast passenger service is maintained with Fishguard in Wales (62 miles).

Wexford, the county town is a, thriving place with some important industries. It stands where the Slanev widens into the broad expanse of Wexford Harbour. Enniscorthy on the Slaney, is also a busy town, as is New Ross on the Barrow. Gorey a good market town, lies in the north.
